The Restoration of Panama’s National Theatre, led by Ayesa Engineering, Wins the MOA 70 Grand Prize

The architectural renovation project of the National Theatre of Panama, led by Ayesa Engineering, has been awarded the Grand Prize at the 70th Edition of the Best Works of Architecture Awards (MOA).

The Teatro Nacional de Panamá, a landmark building in Panama City’s Old Quarter, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, has undergone an ambitious restoration project led by Ayesa, in collaboration with Panamanian architect Manuel Choy as lead designer. The artistic restoration of the 20th-century frescoes by Roberto Lewis was carried out by artist Ángela Camargo.

Despite holding the highest level of heritage protection as a “first-order” asset, the theatre was forced to close its doors in 2015 due to the deterioration of its infrastructure, as well as the impressive paintings and murals that define the building.

The comprehensive architectural renovation aimed not only to restore the building but also to consolidate its position as one of Central America’s leading theatres.

Thanks to the work of multidisciplinary teams, the restoration has been distinguished with the Grand Prize at the 70th MOA Awards, recognizing the excellence of an intervention that has recovered the essence of one of the country’s most iconic cultural landmarks.

The project included structural reinforcements, restoration of roofs and masonry, full modernization of installations and stage systems, and the refurbishment of the main auditorium, which seats 772 people.

The Grand Prize honours a project that successfully combines heritage conservation with technological modernization, opening a new chapter for one of Panama’s most emblematic cultural venues.

This recognition further strengthens Ayesa’s international standing. Currently ranking 61st in the WA100 ranking, one of the most prestigious global listings in the architectural sector, projects like this one consolidate Ayesa´s its global reach and leadership in design and restoration.

Raúl Bravo, Head of Architecture and Management for Ayesa in Panama, commented: “The restoration of the National Theatre of Panama is a testament to the commitment, dedication, and talent of our teams. Every detail has been addressed with the highest technical rigor and an innovative design vision, integrating respect for heritage with contemporary solutions.

This project not only strengthens our international positioning, but also allows us to actively contribute to the history and cultural fabric of Panamanian society.”

Through this project, Ayesa reaffirms its ability to deliver highly complex projects that demand both technical excellence and deep heritage sensitivity, leaving a lasting mark on the sector and the wider community.
